Technology in the Classroom

Hey Bloggers!!

I had to share this amazing information I learnt in one of my Living and Learning with Technology lectures.

Kathleen Morris is a primary school teacher in Victoria Australia. She has a number of programs up and running with a number of different teachers in various schools around the world. These teachers and their classrooms have been communicating through Skype and blogs to learn about different topics. I think these teachers have taken technology to another level in their classrooms and what they are doing is inspiring. I would love to be part of a program or to created one in the future when I reach my goal of becoming a primary school teacher. This tool would not only get the children excited and motivated about learning but it is also a great way for the teachers to communicate and help each other. Heres a link to Kathleen Morris's website Primary Tech. I advise all Primary Education students to have a look around her site. Its fascinating and inspiring how this program works!

Feed Back

reference
Hey Bloggers!

So this week we had to upload our websites for Peer Review marking. The person's website that I reviewed was very creative. I loved their idea for the social learning task and she did a great job in making her website appealing to eye. There were some pointers I tried to give this person for improving their work which I hope helped.
For my website I didn't receive any feed back, which was a little disheartening. I don't think the system that was selected in the peer review marking task was very effective. Although I didn't get any reviews a fellow peer that I know had four people review hers.
This same student helped me out by going on my website and giving me feedback. This was extremely useful as she high lighted some areas that may need some work. For example, the instructions for my selected network site in my Social Learning task, had only a link to a youtube video. From her advise I added more text and a picture, which I hope has improved my Social Learning task page.

Challenges

Hey Bloggers!
For the past few weeks I've been feeling confident with the progress of my website. I started this unit terrified of computers so I found it unusual that I've actually enjoyed the tasks presented to us so far. But I have just hit my first challenge, in my web page. This challenge nearly had me back thinking how I did before I started this unit, 'I hate computers'.
Everything was great and I was confident with the work I had put into my website and was going to upload it to the peer review link early. Just as I was attempting to publish my Yola site it asked me for payment details. What I didn't realise was I had selected a layout you had to pay for. My challenge now was changing the style and having to write and organise my pages again. It was depressing to have to redo  work I was happy with but now I'm delighted with the end result. From having to organise and rearrange my site I added more information and  as I feel its better than before.
Thanks for reading Bloggers! Keep following my progress. :)

Networking

Hello again Bloggers!

A page of my website has to be dedicated to Task 1, Social Learning. In this task we are to research three different social networks on the internet. I have concentrated on Flickr, Instagram and Tumblr. These three different networks are highly based on sharing photos with people around the world. I specifically researched photo sharing sites for my social learning topic it is me wanting to show people where I have been and give them helpful tips about these places. Here is a brief description of the three networks.

Instgram is a phone app dedicated to only sharing photos. With this app you can take a photo or choose from your picture library. Once the photo has been selected you can then change the color through different effects and add a caption. Then press share for your followers to see your photo. This is a simple and easy to use app that is a great way to share photo's any time, as its all on your phone. I didn't choose this network for my Social Learning Task as its only accessible on a phone.

Flickr is a service to share photos and videos on the internet. You can create groups with family and friends and keep the photos published between yourselves. I've created a site for all three of the networks I'm researching but to be honest I got really confused trying to navigate myself around Flickr. I wasn't very fond of the layout. I found it difficult finding how to get back and forth from the home page to my personal page. The entire site wasn't visually appealing to me and I couldn't figure out if there was a way to customise and change the layout. Here's a link to 'Wikipedia', an encyclopaedia where anyone can contribute information, clink on the link to see information on Flickr if you are interested in having a look into it.

My selected social learning website ended up being Tumblr. This is a great and easy site to communicate with others. I had only thought about uploading and sharing photos when I first decided on my social learning topic. But through Tumblr  have broadened my knowledge on the different tools that are available to me. On my Tumblr account I can upload text, photo's, audio, videos, maps and links. Now I have more ways to communicate and show others about my adventures. I advise others to check out this great networking site!

Thanks for reading Bloggers. Stay tuned for more of my progress through my studies.

Week 1

Hey Bloggers!
I've completed my first week at Uni! After running around trying to find lecture halls and tutor rooms I think I'm beginning to get into the swing of student life at Murdoch. And as you can see I've got a blog up and running, I'm beginning to understand it, a little.
So in this blog I want to let you know how I found my first week of my Living and Learning with Technology unit. The lecture was interesting but mostly I felt overwhelmed listening to what was expected of us. I don't understand computers! I've always tried to dodge computers, only using Word and google as tools for Uni and Facebook for staying in contact with friends and family in Ireland.

This short clip uploaded by Darren Cannell on the 25th of October 2009 was shown to us in the first lecture. Remembering back to when I was in primary school computers were barely used. We had an allocated time once a week were we got to use the computer room, but only to play games. It wasn't until secondary school that I learnt the basics on a computer and even at that I struggled. This video was an eye opener for seeing how times have changed and how technology is a major aspect in the education curriculum. It's definitely something I have to learn more about and explore from now on. After the lecture I went through the unit guild to try and outline everything I have to do.

The first task I was wanting to concentrate on was creating my website. I have selected a network named Yola to create my website through. It was only a few easy steps to create my website and now I'm beginning to customise it, which I'm really enjoying. There are four different components to be include and attached to your website;

Home Page
Here is where you'll welcome viewers with description of what your webpage is about and maybe even an eye catching image. Remember this page is the first place people will see when entering your website, think not just of text but of ways to intrigue people into exploring the rest of your site. For my home page I've chosen a bright and easy to navigate theme, and also a picture of an inspirational quote. I'm happy with the way this page looks but it may change as my knowledge of the website grows.

Contact page
This page is all about you! Here you can add contact details such as an email address or other networking addresses and write a biography to let the viewers know a little about you. On my contact page I've wrote a little about myself and added fake contact details (as I don't want people knowing my details) and a picture of myself.

Social Learning page
I haven't looked into this page just yet. Will be starting on it soon though :)

So far I haven't had too much trouble in my work and developing my website. I did get confused when creating my Blogger account, as I continued to be sent to a Google + page which I didn't realise was connected to Blogger. I had accidentally created an Google + account and was working on that, thinking it was my blog. All is sorted now.
My main concern this week is trying to understand how LMS works. Attending ECU last year I never came across a system like this, although there is most likely one at that Uni, I was never told by tutors to use it. With having a look on LMS, I can see how this tool can come in use throughout my Uni carrer. There were questions asked by fellow peers which I was also dwelling on. Although I haven't interacted with others on this tool just yet, I plan to have a go in the next coming weeks. Will keep you updated.
